Overview
Uptone is a music-based language learning platform designed to make learning convenient and fun. Reinventing the traditional way to learn a new language, Uptone offers personalized playlists with lyric translations, community features, and karaoke practice with speech recognition.
Research
Learning a new language can be frustrating
Language brings people together. As students from different backgrounds, we saw how learning languages can create connections across cultures.
However, it's challenging for learners to maintain consistency, often losing motivation to practice until they eventually stop.

Competitor Analysis
Low engagement and lack of conversational practice
Looking into existing language learning apps with different approaches to learning, we analyzed their strengths and weaknesses.
Our findings showed challenges with user retention due to limited interactivity. While most apps had speech recognition in lessons, they did not provide personalized, meaningful feedback on pronunciation.

We held 8 one-on-one interviews and a survey with 52 respondents with the goal of identifying motivations, learning methods, and pain points.

We designed mid-fidelity wireframes for our app and website, further developing our concept and finalizing the overall functionality.

In two rounds we conducted usability testing with 6 different users, giving them a set of tasks to complete and navigate through the prototype.

Reflection
Teamwork makes the dreamwork
Leading this team taught me to really step out of my comfort zone and how valuable communication is. I learned how to collaborate effectively, balance different priorities, and be open to feedback.
It's all in the details
Being one of my first UX projects, I explored visual hierarchy and how to work with components. I saw how complex design systems are and the thought behind them to create better user experiences.
